Following Real Madrid's record £80 million offer for Ronaldo, skysports.com looks at ten other transfers which stunned football.
1. Kaka to Real Madrid - £59m
The Brazilian playmaker was finally lured away from AC Milan by Madrid's returning president Florentino Perez after pledging for months he wanted to remain in Italy. Kaka resisted a huge money offer from Manchester City back in January but decided to make the move to the Liga giants earlier this month, claiming the then world record fee would help the Rossoneri deal with the global financial crisis.
2. Zinedine Zidane to Real Madrid - £46.7m
Following the controversial arrival of Luis Figo in the Spanish capital a year before, Real president Florentino Perez continued his now infamous Galacticos project with the capture of the then Fifa World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane from Italian giants Juventus for a fee that stood as the world record until Kaka's deal.
3. Luis Figo to Real Madrid - £37m
Perez was elected Real president in the summer of 2000 on the back of his promise to do the unthinkable and bring the star player from arch-rivals Barcelona to the Bernabeu. Upon appointment he was true to his word, breaking the world transfer record by signing Luis Figo for £37million.
4. Hernan Crespo to Lazio - £35.7m
In the summer of 2000 Sven-Goran Eriksson's Lazio were Serie A champions and flush with cash following the sale of Christian Vieri to Inter Milan a year before for a then world-record fee. They spent £35.7million of their money on Parma's Hernan Crespo, who finished top scorer in the league in his first season in Rome but was unable to help the club defend their Scudetto and also left for Inter in 2002.
5. Robinho to Man City - £32.5m
Having been taken over by the super-rich Abu Dhabi investment group on the final day of the 2008 summer transfer window, the new owners of Manchester City made a signal of their intent by beating Chelsea to the signing of unsettled Brazilian star Robinho from Real Madrid in a Premier League record deal worth £32.5million.
6. Gianluigi Buffon to Juve - £32m
With Parma selling off all their best players, Italian giants Juventus pipped Roma to the signing of Azzurri shot-stopper Gianluigi Buffon for £32million - a figure which remains a world record sum for a goalkeeper.
7. Dimitar Berbatov to Man Utd - £30.75m
Having intimated his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur, the Bulgarian striker finally completed his move to the Premier League champions on deadline day last season with Sir Alex Ferguson smashing the Red Devils' transfer record in the process.
8. Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea - £30m
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had long coveted the AC Milan striker and finally lured him to Stamford Bridge in 2006. However, Shevchenko struggled in the Premier League and was loaned back to Milan last season. His long-term future remains uncertain.
9. Rio Ferdinand to Man Utd - £29.1m
Ferdinand had already commanded the record fee for a defender when moving from West Ham to Leeds United. Some stand-out displays during the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea - coupled with Leeds' worsening financial position - saw Sir Alex Ferguson come calling to lure the centre-back to Old Trafford as soon as the finals had finished.
10. Juan Sebastian Veron to Man Utd - £28.1m
Argentina playmaker Veron had proved himself a huge star in Serie A and on the international stage before he was tempted by a crack at the Premier League. His arrival at Old Trafford was hailed as a huge coup for United but the midfielder seldom hit the heights of his time in Italy and was soon on his way.
